Root Canal Treatment

Brighton & Hove

Root canal therapy is done for removing infection from inside a tooth. It can also protect the tooth from future infections.

It is carried out in the pulp of the tooth, which is the root canal.

It is one of the final measures to save the tooth when the decay is caused due to the infection in blood or nerve supply of the tooth.

What does it involve?

  • The aim of the treatment is to remove all the infection from the root canal. The root is then cleaned and filled to prevent any further infection.
  • Root canal treatment is a skilled and time-consuming procedure. Most courses of treatment will involve two or more visits to your dentist.
  • At the first appointment, the infected pulp is removed and any abscesses can be drained. An abscess is an inflamed area in which pus collects and can cause swelling of the tissues around the tooth. The root canal is then cleaned and shaped ready for the filling. A temporary filling is put in and the tooth is left to settle.
  • The tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is root canal treatment needed?

If the pulp becomes infected, the infection may spread through the root canal system of the tooth and can cause swelling of the tissues around the tooth. IT causes severe pain and if root canal treatment is not done, the infection will spread and the tooth may need to be taken out. However, there are no guarantees of success of the treatment.

Do Root canal treatment hurt?

You are completely numb when you have a root canal treatment so the process should be painless. It is quite common to have a little discomfort for a week after. Pain relief could involve taking paracetamol (dependent on your medical history).

After Root canal treatment do I need a Crown or Onlay?

After a root canal treatment on a back tooth the tooth is significantly weakened so it is often necessary to place a supporting structure in the form of a crown or an onlay to stop the tooth fracturing.

How do I know if I need a Root canal treatment?

The best way is to go to the dentist to have an examination. In some cases pain can mean you need a root canal treatment, however sometimes a tooth can be completely asymptomatic yet need a root canal treatment.
